About the Event

The Georgia Conference on Children & Families is the largest annual interdisciplinary event in Georgia designed to convene the community that serves children and families. With the theme of “We Are the Village,” GCCF 2023 will feature specialized tracks, training/CE opportunities, and keynote speakers with the goal of improving outcomes for the children and families that we serve.

GCCF Participants represent the full spectrum of disciplines and organizations serving Georgia’s children and families which includes child advocacy, behavioral health, juvenile justice, social service, education, legal counsel and the faith-based community. The conference provides a forum to improve competencies, learn from experts in the field and network with other professionals who have a wealth of experience.

Supporting Foster/Homeless Youth in Higher Education

Increasing postsecondary opportunities for young people with foster care experience is the goal of Embark Georgia. This session will focus on systematic efforts that are taking place across Georgia to support TAY youth in their pursuit of a postsecondary credential as well as how adult supporters can engage with the Embark Georgia network in support of young people. Poverty 101

Any professional working with children and families can attest to witnessing the detrimental impacts of poverty, yet very few have ever had any formal training or education on it. This training will help professionals remove barriers, improve practices, and promote better communication and relationships with vulnerable families. Using first-hand stories and perspectives, participants will learn the facts, underlying myths, examine their own perceptions, and be able to enact tangible strategies to uplift our community’s vulnerable populations.

Safe Infant Sleep

This training will walk through all 16 of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for safe infant sleep and highlight definitions, clarifications, and the latest data. New recommendations are presented regarding noninclined sleep surfaces, use of cardboard boxes as a sleep location, bed sharing, substance use, home cardiorespiratory monitors, and tummy time. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

PCIT is a short-term, specialized behavior management program designed for young children experiencing behavioral and/or emotional difficulties and their families. PCIT teaches caregivers to manage their child’s difficult behaviors, while increasing their positive behaviors. PCIT works with the child and caregiver together to improve behavior and reduce parenting stress. PCIT is an exceptionally effective treatment backed by over 30 years of research. Live coaching is a hallmark of PCIT. The therapist observes the caregiver and child together, then provides coaching on the PCIT skills. Caregivers and therapists work together to manage challenging child behaviors. This workshop will introduce Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, explore outcomes we are seeing within the community, and provide an opportunity to practice some of the techniques and skills used to reshape family dynamics through PCIT.

Youth Challenge Program- A Life Changing Impact

The Georgia Youth ChalleNGe Program is a voluntary alternative education program open to 16 to 18-year who are behind academically or have already left school and who are looking for a way to change their lives through education, service to community, physical fitness and life skills training. This 22-week residential military-style, tuition-free program helps young people earn their GED, or High School diploma and offers pathways to enroll in college, enter the workforce or join the military.

Where Do I Go From Here? Finding Resources and Supports for Parents Experiencing Substance Use Disorder

Parents experiencing substance use disorder in the child welfare system find themselves in an urgent situation for support and resources and oftentimes are not sure where to go to receive services.
